- Story Text: Drinkers were being urged to breathe responsibly as the world's first alcoholic cloud bar opened to patrons in London on Friday (July 31).
''We've developed technology that allows us to vaporise gin, tonic, lemon. We created a hyper humid atmosphere which people can literally breathe in and be part of their own cocktail,'' said Ian Cameron, the creative director of Bompas & Parr who created the breathable spirit.
The walk-in cloud enables customers to absorb alcohol into the body through their lungs and eyeballs.
The bar, called Alcoholic Architecture, is located on the site of a former monastery and pays homage to monks and other religious orders, selling a range of monastic inspired drinks to complement the cloud.
Inside the bar, drinkers have to wear plastic ponchos to enter the room where the cloud, composed of spirits and a mixer, is pumped into a room with a humidity level of 140%.
The alcohol bypasses the liver straight into the bloodstream, which its creators claim allows you to drink 40% less with the same effects on the body.
Cameron says that the cloud can intoxicate people exposed to it but insists that his team has worked with respiratory scientists and chemists to keep drinkers safe.
''If you are in the cloud long enough, then yes you are going to feel the effects. But, like I say, we are keeping it safe so people can only stay in there for 50 minutes max,'' he said.
Punters hoping to get drunk in the cloud may be a little disappointed as one hour in it equates to just one unit of alcohol. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
