- Story Text: 392 migrants, mostly from Sub-Saharian Africa, were brought to safety on Friday (July 31) in the Sicilian strait town of Messina.
Also on Friday, in separate operations, 225 rescued migrants were brought to Trapani, in Western Sicily, and about 200 in Vibo Valentia, in the Calabria region.
All the migrants were rescued at sea in the last 48 hours within 50 miles of the coast of Libya.
More than 150,000 migrants, many fleeing poverty and war in sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East, came to Europe by sea between January and July, according to the International Organisation for Migration.
Most of them cross the narrow stretch of sea from lawless Libya to Italy and Greece.
However, many of the boats are unseaworthy and the United Nations estimates that some 1,900 would-be migrants have died since January trying to make the crossing. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
