  • Story Text: Calais ferry workers, Eurotunnel and Danish company DFDS did not reach an agreement on Wednesday (July 30) during a meeting which was held in Paris together with the secretary of state for transport, sea and fishing, Alain Vidalies.
    Calais ferry workers have been demonstrating for months against Eurotunnel's decision to sell to Danish company DFDS its Calais-to-Dover ferry business which had previously been operated by French companies Scop SeaFrance and My Ferry links. Ferry workers actions included blocking the entering in Calais of DFDS ferries.
    "There isn't yet a clear agreement. Now we have some basic agreement which have well advanced with Eurotunnel, but with DFDS there is no agreement," said the leader of Calais seamen's union, Eric Vercoutre.
    A written statement issued by Vidalies' office said some progress had been made in the negotiations. DFDS has committed itself to provide details to SeaFrance ferry workers on the number of French employees they will hire. Eurotunnel repeated its commitment to establish a ferry charter contract that will save 150 jobs.
    Vercoutre said that employees would meet on Friday to decide whether to organise further protest actions.
