  • Story Text: About 250 migrants from Sub-Saharan Africa were taken to safety in the Southern Sicilian port of Pozzallo on Thursday (July 30) by the Italian coastguard vessel 'Orsi'.
    Another 350 had been landed about 100 kilometres north of Pozzallo, in the port town of Augusta earlier on Thursday. More arrivals are expected on Friday (July 31) in Sicily and Calabria, the Italian coastguard said.
    More than 150,000 migrants, many fleeing poverty and war in sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East, came to Europe by sea between January and July, according to the International Organisation for Migration.
    Most of them cross the narrow stretch of sea from lawless Libya to Italy and Greece.
