- Story Text: Shelling killed two people and injured six others in the rebel-held east Ukrainian town of Horlivka in the early hours of Thursday (July 30), witnesses and medics said.
People were fixing broken windows and assessing damage as the members of the OSCE (Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe) monitoring mission arrived to the site later in the day.
They examined holes on the ground left by the shells and talked to the locals.
Lyudmila Andreyeva, who lives in the nearby residential building, said shelling came out of the blue.
"They were shelling in the evening, and at 3:55 a.m. five shells hit here. We did not even have time to put on a bathrobe, I threw the child into the bathroom together with the mattress," she said, holding her three-year-old grand-daughter on her hands.
Shells landed in the yard scattering fragments around the place. Svetlana Kurdyukova told Reuters, that one of the fragments claimed the life of her 64-year-old friend Nikolai.
"Whistle and blast, whistle and blast, five shells hit here. One fell in the yard next to the pavilion. You must have seen that all the windows got shattered on this side of the building. It flew over the granny's head. And Nikolai went out to the kitchen, he was standing there, it hit the window and him right into his heart, and that was it. He did not even scream, there was no blood or anything, he just dropped dead," she said, showing holes in the back of the bed.
A surgeon at the local hospital, Nikolai Tishchenko, said six people were brought in after the shelling.
"There are six (wounded) people. Four of them were hospitalised, two in the surgery department, two in the trauma unit department, and a seven-year-old child was hospitalised in the intensive therapy ward, he has a fragmentation wound on the head and an injury to his eye," he said.
Separatists have accused Ukrainians of using tanks and artillery in an overnight attack on Horlivka.
A Ukrainian military spokesman told a news briefing that two men were killed in Dzerzhynsk, north of the regional hub, when separatists opened fire from Horlivka, 7.5 km (4.7 miles) away.
The state prosecutor said one Ukrainian serviceman was also killed in the attack.
The casualty reports could not be independently verified.
More than 6,500 people have been killed since the fighting broke out in April last year. Attacks have lessened since a peace agreement was brokered in Minsk, Belarus, in February, but both sides accuse each other of violating the ceasefire. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
