- Story Text: Mavis Tauzeni is chatting with some of the people who have come to view her work at the First Floor Gallery in Harare, Zimbabwe. This is the 33-year-old artist's first solo exhibition.
Dubbed "Eve's Diaries," it examines female identity and illustrates gender relationships in Zimbabwean society.
"For me this exhibition is about my journey thus far as a woman growing up in Zimbabwe. It's an expression of my journey; of the things I see; my wishes, my dreams, my perceptions and fantasies," said Tauzeni.
Tauzeni began working as a professional artist in 2009. Using an array of colours, her paintings reflect the complex emotional life of women. She says art provides her with a safe space from which to speak her mind.
"Art has been a good platform for me because it has been a good voice for me to express some of my issues because I am not very good at talking in public but I am very good in expressing myself through paint and other media," added Tauzeni.
Those who attended the opening say they were impressed by Tauzeni's work.
"I really like the show; the works are good. It's exceptional and it's good to see a lot of talent coming out of Zimbabwean women so thumbs up to Mavis," said this unnamed gallery visitor.
"I enjoy particularly how she explores the responsibility that comes with being a woman, you know, you are a mother, you are a sister, you are an aunt, you are a niece, you are a grandmother and it kind of reflects in her paintings and I think they are also very expressive, her colours explore a lot of emotions," added another gallery visitor.
Tauzeni's paintings have been showcased at international art fairs in London and Germany. She has also won several awards locally where she also enjoys critical acclaim. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
