- Story Text: Salma Hayek was all smiles as she arrived on the carpet Wednesday night (July 29) for the Los Angeles screening of the animated film, "Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet."
The movie, which draws on the 1923 book by Lebanese-born writer Kahlil Gibran, tells the story of Almitra, a headstrong girl who forms a friendship with imprisoned poet Mustafa.
Hayek, who co-produced the film and does the voiceover for Almitra's mother, Kamila, told Reuters the story is best told through the work of animation.
"You can express more in sensation through the art and the music and the poetry," said Hayek. "The movie is about freedom and the animation gave us the freedom to be more faithful to the theme of the film."
In the film, written and directed by Lion King director Roger Allers, Mustafa is locked away for his poetry, which is deemed dangerous and rebellious. He explains to Almitra how he escapes his imprisonment through his mind.
Mustafa is voiced by Liam Neeson, who like everyone else on the set was easily drawn to the small-budget film, Hayek said.
"It is such an iconic book," explained Hayek. "It has sold more than 120 million copies around the world. It is so beloved, so it is important to get it right. I can tell you that every person who worked on this film did it from the heart, no one got paid I can tell you."
