  • Story Text: 453 migrants, mostly of Syrian origin, were brought to land by Irish Navy ship LE Niamh in Messina, Sicily, on Wednesday (July 29). The ship also carried the bodies of 14 migrants that were found dead on the boat at rescue.
    An Italian coast guard spokesman said on Tuesday (July 28) that rescuers found 14 dead migrants on a boat off the coast of Libya with more than 500 others aboard, giving no details about how they had died.
    Irish ship LE Niamh, mobilised as part of the European Union's Triton mission, and one operated by the Doctors Without Borders charity had gone to the rescue of the boat about 50 miles (80 km) off Libya late on Monday (July 27).
    Some 150,000 migrants have reached Europe by sea this year, most landing in Italy and Greece, and more than 1,900 have drowned during the crossing, according to the International Organization for Migration.
