- Story Text: Jerusalem's annual festival, which celebrates music and culture opened on Tuesday (July 28) with a performance by Palestinian oud group, Le Trio Joubran.
The Jerusalem Festival, which has been running for decades, is an opportunity to celebrate and preserve Palestinian culture.
Rania Elias is one of the event's organisers, she says it's important for the an event of this kind to take place in this city.
"The goal of this festival is to focus on Jerusalem, it is named after Jerusalem to preserve the national identity in it and to openly move to the world with art works and productions. Also we send a message that still there are residents in this city who work to preserve their identity and develop themselves despite living under the occupation,'' she said.
The musical trio captivated the crowds with their music, and they've gained a following not only in the Arab speaking world but also elsewhere for their oud masterpieces.
Most recently the trio, all brothers, played to an audience in London.
Samir, Wissam, and Adnan Joubran are all from Nazareth.
For one of the group's musicians, Samir, he says it's a privilege to play to an audience in Jerusalem.
"What makes us unique, and I heard that many times, that the Palestinian who becomes internationally famous cares more about Palestine. When we become more famous internationally we become more close to Palestine because Palestine is the factory and the lab where the genetics of this music come from (the origin of this music). Here we perform the music at its origins so if we succeed in Palestine we succeed in the world and if we succeed in the world that means that our audience believe us,'' he said.
"We tour the world to deliver the message of art, homeland, politics and freedom. When we come to Palestine there is no need to speak about politics we come to give some joy and hope,' he added.
The brothers now divide their time between the West Bank and France.
Those attending the performance, praised their musical talents.
"I was surprised by the performance it was great and the talent that I saw I consider it to be an international level,'' said festival attendee Nazeh Mushasha.
''This is the first time for us to attend the Jerusalem Festival and we heard a lot about Le Trio Joubran, we were looking forward to the Trio Joubran event. The atmosphere today was incredible and and the Joubran brothers made it a great tonight,'' added Jerusalem Festival first-timer Sari Nabulsi.
The six day festival ends on August 2 with a number of Palestinian musicians and singers due to take to the stage. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
