- Story Text: Clinton foundation Vice Chair Chelsea Clinton, daughter of U.S. presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, visited Haiti on Tuesday (July 28), meeting with artisans and entrepreneurs in a tour to encourage economic growth and empower girls and women.
Clinton led a group of philanthropists and business leaders to visit Clinton Foundation projects throughout the capital Port-au-Prince.
They first visited a group called "Caribbean Craft", where Clinton talked with artisans about their path to Caribbean Craft and the impact it has had on their lives.
Later in the day, Clinton hosted a discussion called "No Ceilings Conversation", where she highlighted the need for women's literacy.
"We know that if women around the world learn to read, just truly learn to read, more than 250 million women would be lifted out of poverty," she said.
Clinton also talked about improving education for young girls.
"And although the world is more focused now on closing this secondary school gap, and doing things like building more schools so that there's not the two-and-a-half hour walk, so there aren't the attendant safety concerns, hiring and training good teachers, removing school fees - which we know is a major reason why so many girls aren't in school around the world - we need programmes like this to help close the gap so that girls and young women who haven't had the chance to get educated don't live with the burden of illiteracy their whole lives," she said.
On Wednesday (July 29) Clinton will continue her visit, touring a farming cooperative and a warehouse where farmers sell their crops.
According to the Clinton Foundation, the group has helped raised more than $30 million U.S. for Haiti since 2010. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
