- Story Text: Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday (July 29) held a welcoming ceremony for his Turkish counterpart Tayyip Erdogan in Beijing, in a visit aimed at strengthening ties between the two countries.
Both Xi and Erdogan inspected the guard of honour outside the east gate of Beijing's Great Hall of People.
Erdogan kicked off his two-day visit in China on Wednesday, at the invitation of Xi.
Erdogan's state visit to China is expected to focus on Turkish trade links with the world's second-biggest economy, but a recent diplomatic spat over the treatment of China's Muslim minority Uighurs will also loom over talks.
Erdogan may field complaints about recent protests, some violent, against China's embassy and citizens in Turkey by nationalist Turks angered by China's treatment of Uighurs.
Turkey is open to an improved offer from preferred bidder China in a long-range missile defence system tender, Erdogan said ahead of his visit to Beijing, reviving a deal that has raised security concerns among NATO allies.
Erdogan also met Chinese Premier Li Keqiang earlier on Wednesday. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
