- Story Text: Sao Paulo´s Plus Size Fashion Week took diversity as its inspiration on Saturday (July 25) looking to challenge the paradigms of couture with a fun and funky celebration of women´s wobbles and curves.
Fashion and beauty enthusiasts gathered at the Frei Caneca Convention Centre on Saturday night to watch leading Plus Size designers such as Upsy and Liria Belle, reveal their Summer 2016 collections and a whole lot more.
There was no hiding behind sarongs or beach towels in the opening swimwear collection full of polka dot bikinis, pop art prints, and swing dancing struts.
For Fashion Week organiser, Renata Poskus, the twelfth edition of the event was aimed at doing away with the myths that dictate a women´s dress code by the size on the tag.
"I think that Plus Size Fashion Week shows women that they can be part of the fashion world, that they can wear everything that a skinny woman wears. For example, I am wearing white today. People say that fat women cannot wear white because it makes them fatter. White doesn´t make me fat, fast food does, so why can´t I dress like this and feel happy? This event serves to break the myths that a fat woman cannot wear certain colours, short clothes. No, she can wear anything. Fashion is for everyone, fashion is democratic," said Poskus enthusiastically back stage.
Designer, Dina Costa, was equally passionate about working in the sector, as one Plus Sized woman making outfits for many others.
"It is a great job, especially as I am plus sized. It makes me very happy when a client buys these clothes from me and likes them, or when I see someone wearing my clothes in the street. It is what makes me feel fulfilled," Costa told Reuters.
Dancing in a sixties A-line to "Hit the Road Jack", model and fashion blogger Paula Bastos waved goodbye to all those who doubted her as a model and beauty icon, which had included even herself.
"I never imagined (becoming a model), I was always overweight, I was always fat, I never had the model prototype. I am tall and people joke around saying if I were thin I could be a model. It is great for me knowing that, being the way I am, I can have an impact on the lives of other women, show that I am also beautiful, charming, it is really cool," said Bastos. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
