- Story Text: Indonesia fans gathered at the Gelora Bung Karno stadium on Saturday (July 25) to watch the first practice by Italian soccer club AS Roma during their pre-season tour in Asia, despite the country's soccer federation still being banned by FIFA.
Thousand of supporters of the club queued at ticket boxes in the stadium complex to see their idols Francesco Totti, Daniele de Rossi, and Radja Nainggolan among others.
Officials informed the Serie A side that five players, Seydou Doumbia, Gervinho, Victor Ibarbo, Adem Ljajic and Antonio Sanabria, were denied entry into the country and were put on planes bound for Rome.
A supporter, Franky Cuciputih, said the incident involving the five banned players was an embarrassment that should have not have happened.
"From my opinion it's (the incident of players returned due to immigration problems) happened because of lack of preparation from the organizers. I hope that something like this could be corrected again and we could see a more complete team in the future event," he told Reuters while waiting in a queue outside the stadium.
The team did not specify why the players were not allowed to enter the country.
Another fan, Rahman Yustiadi, said that the tour would help to improve Indonesian soccer.
"I think this (AS Roma's tour) becomes a whip for the PSSI ( Indonesia Football Association) and Kemenpora (Minister of Youth and Sport) to make peace, as we see Roma now play with their own team, I am hoping the arrival of AS Roma will change the PSSI and Kemenpora and Indonesian football for better," he said.
Roma's red team beat their white opponents 2-1 and Francesco Totti scored a goal from a penalty in the second half.
The club is visiting Jakarta for the first time as part of their programme called "AS Roma Indonesia Day 2015".
Roma are on the final leg of their pre-season tour after taking part in the International Champions Cup tournament in Australia, where they beat Real Madrid in a shootout and lost to Manchester City in the same manner. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
