- Story Text: Former FIFA Vice President Jack Warner appeared in a Trinidad and Tobago court on Monday (July 27) in relation to an extradition request on corruption charges.
Warner, 72, was arrested on a provisional warrant and is currently on bail. He is wanted in the U.S. on a dozen charges including bribery, corruption and wire fraud conspiracy.
"I've asked my legal team to file for judicial review based on the fact of political bias," Warner told reporters outside the court house.
FIFA has been the subject of a series of allegations in the media and in books for many years. That came to a head in May when U.S. prosecutors indicted nine soccer officials, most of whom had FIFA positions, and five marketing and broadcasting company executives for a range of bribery-related offenses, including fraud, money laundering and racketeering.
Warner suggested the prime minister and other officials have tainted his case because of political bias and that he has already been tried in the "public domain".
"Therefore it is almost impossible to get a fair hearing as a consequence," Warner said, adding that the case has been adjourned until August 28. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
