- Story Text: Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met with Libyan Foreign Minister Mohammed Dayri in Cairo on Monday (July 27) to discuss the political and security situation in Libya.
Shoukry stressed the importance of the signing of the United Nations proposal by the the remaining Libyan factions, according to the state news agency MENA.
The proposal calls for a one-year-long government of national accord, where a council of ministers headed by a prime minister, and two deputies, will have executive authority based in Tripoli.
Western officials say the U.N. talks are the only hope of halting fighting among factions allied to the oil producer's two governments and parliaments vying for power four years after the ousting of Muammar Gaddafi.
An armed alliance known as Libya Dawn took over Tripoli and declared its own government and parliament a year ago, driving out the internationally recognised premier and deepening anarchy in the North African country.
The agreement also addresses terms of a ceasefire, disarmament for armed groups, dealing with a unified armed forces and withdrawing armed groups from oil facilities, airports and other installations after signing of the deal.
Shoukry later met with Palestinian Chief negotiator Saeb Erekat where he said that there is a concentration on creating a unified Palestinian government, adding that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbass will speak in August to Arab Foreign Ministers.
Erekat said that the violence surrounding Jerusalem's Al Aqsa mosque was also discussed, where Egypt and Jordan said that they will "exert all efforts to ensure the halting of the Israeli aggression." - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
