- Story Text: Manchester United announced the signing of Argentina national team goalkeeper Sergio Romero on their official website on Monday (July 27), from San Jose, where they are based for their pre-season tour of the United States.
Romero, who was on the losing Argentina team in both the 2014 World Cup final and the 2015 Copa America final in Chile, joins up with the squad ahead of the start of the Premier League season on August 8.
The signing of Romero, who was a free agent having left Italian side Sampdoria, is sure to prompt further questions over the future of current Manchester United number one David de Gea, who has been linked with a move to Real Madrid.
However, Romero could be seen as a back-up to de Gea as previous number two, Victor Valdes, didn't travel with United to the United States and is expected to leave this summer.
Romero told the club's official website that he was delighted to move to United.
"To play for the biggest club in the world is a dream come true for me. Louis van Gaal is a fantastic manager and I cannot wait to get started on this new and exciting challenge in my career," the 28-year-old was quoted as saying.
The Argentine played under Manchester United boss van Gaal during his time with Dutch side AZ Alkmaar and the Dutchman is looking forward to working with Romero again.
"Sergio is a very talented goalkeeper," van Gaal was quoted by the club's website.
"He was a young keeper during my time at AZ Alkmaar and I am delighted he is joining Manchester United. He had a fantastic World Cup last summer in Brazil, although that is something I have put to the back of my mind! He will be a great addition to the team and I am looking forward to working with him once again."
Romero becomes Manchester United's fifth major signing of the summer, after the arrivals of Dutch forward Memphis Depay, Italian defender Matteo Darmain, and midfielders Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlein. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
