- Story Text: The Serbian capital has for days baked under temperatures around 37 degrees Celsius (100 F ) in the shade, with thermometers hitting 39 degrees Celsius (102,2 F) on Sunday (July 19).
Given the long duration of the heat wave, Belgrade medical emergency service teams have faced a number of callouts, most related to chronic heart conditions and the elderly.
City authorities put cisterns with water on the main Belgrade squares. Officials have appealed to companies that during high temperatures -- above 36 degrees Celsius -- outdoor work is organised so to avoid hard labour and exposure of employees to direct sunlight, especially between 11:00 to 16:00 local time (09.00 till 14.00 GMT).
Fire-fighters across Serbia are on standby.
In Belgrade zoo, workers have redoubled efforts to help animals cope in the heat.
Even the 42-year-old African elephant Twiggy, in Belgrade zoo needs a shower to refresh her.
During the day, workers have also blasted arctic wolves and polar bears with cool water.
"We have been doing our best to make life easier for animals during this tropical heat. We shower the elephant "Twiggy", the arctic wolves. We also take care about food, the animals get fresh food, lost of fruit and vegetables, fruit with a lot of water," zoo veterinarian Jozef Ezvedj said.
High temperatures are expected to continue throughout the week, and doctors have advised people to stay indoors and drink plenty of liquids. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
