- Story Text: Riot police fired water cannon to disperse demonstrators gathered in central Istanbul on Sunday (July 26) for the funeral of a woman killed during a police raid on the far left Revolutionary People's Liberation Party-Front (DHKP-C).
Gunay Ozarslan, a suspected member of the outlawed DHKP-C, was shot dead by police during simultaneous operations launched in 22 provinces on Friday (July 24) against Islamic State, Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), and DHKP-C, the private Dogan news agency reported.
Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said on Friday that the security operations were not a one-off but were comprehensive and would continue.
Davutoglu told reporters at a news conference that 297 people, including 37 foreign nationals, were detained in operations across the country.
The raids followed air strikes by Turkish fighter jets against Islamic State militants in Syria and Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) camps in Iraq on Saturday.
The military action drew protests in Turkey followed by clashes in several provinces where police fired tear gas and water cannon to break up demonstrations.
Separately, protesters organised a peace march for Sunday, but Istanbul authorities said they would not let organisers go ahead, citing concerns about security and dense traffic. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
