- Story Text: Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on Friday (March 13) he was matching up to 20 million dollars in donations to help fight coronavirus.
In his Facebook post, Zuckerberg said he was donating 10 million dollars to the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund, a project in conjunction with the United Nations Foundation and the World Health Organization.
Zuckerberg also announced a 10-million-dollar donation to the CDC Foundation.
In his post Zuckerberg said the funds will help "support the work to prevent, detect and respond to the outbreak around the world."
Europe has now become the epicenter of a coronavirus pandemic that has claimed 5,000 lives around the world, "a tragic milestone", the World Health Organization said on Friday.
More than 132,000 cases of the virus have been reported in 123 countries since it emerged in December in the central Chinese city of Wuhan, WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a virtual news conference.
