- Story Text: Usain Bolt returned to form three weeks ahead of the World Championships as he clocked his season's best in winning the 100m at the Diamond League meeting in London on Friday (July 24).
The Jamaican, returning to the scene of his 2012 Olympics triumph, ran a 9.87 in the final having notched up the same time in winning his heat.
His effort, into a strong headwind and in cold, rainy conditions, was enough to beat American Michael Rodgers and fellow Jamaican Kemar Bailey-Cole.
"It was a pretty good run," he said. "I was really happy with my performance. My execution in the heats was pretty good, I thought my finals was pretty bad I am not happy with the way that I ran it, but it was just one of those things."
Bolt had not previously gone under 10 seconds this season, and his performance in London will send a warning to Justin Gatlin and Tyson Gay with the World Championships in Beijing looming.
"Without a doubt," he said, when asked if he could beat Gatlin.
Bolt's fellow Olympic champion Mo Farah received a warm welcome from his home crowd as he triumphed in the 3000m, his winning time of 7:34.66 the quickest this year and a personal best.
Farah has been under pressure since his coach Alberto Salazar was accused of doping by the BBC - no wrongdoing has been alleged against Farah - but he shrugged off the problems to romp home ahead of a strong field.
"It was good," said Farah. "Early on I felt tired. I didn't feel as good, but I knew my speed was there so I just had to use it at the end. But I tried to go with the pace. I went with it, felt a bit tired and I had to make a decision to either try and run a fast time, or try and win the race." - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
