- Story Text: UEFA chief Michel Platini is a "suitable candidate" to follow Sepp Blatter as FIFA president, the president of Germany's football association DFB said in Zurich, Switzerland on Monday (July 20).
Speaking to reporters after a meeting at the FIFA headquarters where the world soccer body set up an 11-man taskforce to propose reforms aimed at cleaning itself up after a series of scandals, Wolfgang Niersbach said "of course Michel Platini is a suitable candidate."
"Whether he will take this step ultimately is his very own decision," Niersbach added.
He also spoke of the "urgency" for reforms, describing the "overall situation FIFA is still in" as "critical."
"I also need to correct my own assessment because I had said that the reform process should be continued with the new president. It has become clear today that we can no longer wait which is why this independent commission was installed. There is indeed an urgency," Niersbach said.
FIFA said the proposals for reform included "centralised integrity checks for Executive Committee members, the introduction of term limits, higher standards of governance at all levels of football structures."
The task force would present its conclusions to the executive committee in September, and this in turn would suggest reforms to FIFA's Congress which has the power to alter the federation's statutes. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
