- Story Text: Indonesia's young and trendy women have caught the attention of the fashion industry with their colourful and stylish hijabs. So much so, there is now a term for them - hijabsters.
Indonesia has the world's largest Muslim population. And the number of women wearing the hijab has increased.
Online fashion store HijUp.com caters to the hijab-wearing women around the world.
Its CEO Dijeng Lestari says demand for their clothing is growing.
"The demand of this new emerging market is very huge and it keeps growing like in Indonesia, Nigeria, Turkey and all the Muslim countries are growing market. They are the new market and I believe the trend is keep growing."
The company also owns fashion magazine "Laiqa". Its editor Hanna Faridl said Indonesia has the potential to become a fashion Mecca for Muslim women.
"So we have a huge market, much bigger than in other Muslim countries and we already are number one in Muslim countries. So this big market should be able to support Indonesia as the potential is big enough," she said.
Faridl said homegrown Muslim designers were increasingly winning international acclaim.
Designers attempted to reach out to middle-class consumers through fashion shows at a shopping mall during the month of Ramadan, as Muslims prepare to celebrate the Eid Al-Fitr festival.
"I think the future of Islamic fashion in Indonesia is very good and maybe in a few years, it could become the Mecca or trendsetter for Muslim fashion," said model Indah Kirana.
International beauty brand "The Body Shop" aims to broaden its presence in the Indonesia market by rolling out cosmetics tailored for Muslim women.
"Nowadays the market for hijabster is getting bigger and trendier too. And we at the Body Shop will be closely following them and cater to their demands as we know. We give a hundred percent vegetarian product, so it's fit and safe for hijabster and Muslim communities," said Muhlis Iswanto Darama, assistant marketing officer of The Body Shop.
