- Story Text: Just after the German parliament approved new negotiations on a Greek bail-out and while Greek banks prepared to open their branches again on Monday (July 20) after a three-week shutdown, the organisers of the 'Big Fat Greek Weekend' were already working on improving Greek-German relations in Berlin.
Talk about the debt crisis was replaced with discussions about the food from both countries.
The attempt seemed to work well according to event organiser Pamela Dorsch.
"The Greek stalls were sold out between eight and nine o'clock (on first evening of event) and very surprised about it, because they would have never thought that there would be such a feedback for their food," she said.
"That's why they were amazed, and this during a time, where you more get the feeling that people don't want to hear anything about Greece."
The event took place in the a market hall in the Berlin neighbourhood of Kreuzberg, where food stalls were set up on Thursday evening selling traditional dishes familiar to millions of holidaymakers to the country.
Greek trader Jorgos Keranis came all the way from Athens to take part in the event and sell some of his traditional Greek salads.
"I believe this is the idea here to come up with what is positive and we can capitalise on the positive stuff," Keranis said.
He expected more negative response to the Greek market, but experienced the opposite, he added. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
