- Story Text: Spain's meteorological agency AEMET put 18 provinces on alert as the mercury rose, ushering in the country's third heatwave of the summer on Monday (July 20).
The provinces on alert for high temperatures are: Cadiz, Cordoba, Granada, Huelva, Jaen, Malaga, Seville, Zaragoza, Albacete, Ciudad Real, Cuenca, Guadalajara, Toledo, Avila, Lleida, Madrid, Badajoz and Mallorca. Cordoba and Jaen are expected to hit 40 degrees celsius.
With temperatures in the high 30s (degrees Celsius) in many parts of Spain, people complain that sleeping has become a problem due to the uncomfortably high temperatures. Working outdoors is also difficult, especially when the sun pounds and there is no shade.
"This is very hard, we can't rest at night, and this is in unbearable. Now we are in the shade, but at three o'clock the sun hits hard over here and you can't stop for a second," builder Angel Caminas said.
His colleague Vicente Toledano said the only way to keep going was to keep hydrated and to look for shade when possible.
"A lot of water, a lot of water and you look for the shade and avoid the sun as much as you can," he said.
Residents and tourists alike seek shade with water, parasols and hand fans becoming the items of choice to combat the heat.
"We drink a lot of water, I just changed my shirt because it was all sweaty, and yeah, I don't know…Go sitting in the shade, look up the shade," one tourist from the Netherlands, Enrico Griffioen, said.
The high temperatures are expected to last through Thursday, AEMET said. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
