- Story Text: Dozens of Venezuelan residents living in the United States and a handful of U.S. citizens left Venezuela on Thursday (April 9) heading home via Mexico.
The Venezuelan government provided a free humanitarian flight for U.S. citizens and residents hoping to return amid the coronavirus pandemic.
A long line formed at the airport in Caracas on Thursday.
Elisa Sosaya, a Venezuelan who lives in the U.S., said the passengers were told they had to depart Mexico within 12 hours of arrival.
Eliana Mejia had come to Venezuela to care for her mother, but was using the flight to return to her home in New York.
The flight was organized through the Venezuelan Consortium of Aeronautical Industries and Air Services S.A. (Conviasa).
