- Story Text: South Korean workers held a massive rally in Seoul on Wednesday (July 15) to demand better working conditions.
South Korean police estimated that about 5,000 people took part in the rally.
The protesters belonged to the Korea Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU), one of the country's major unions.
Gathered in Seoul, they carried placards reading "Let's Finish Park Geun-hye's government".
"Park Geun-hye's government carries out labour policies that are making it easier to fire employees, cut down wage raises and increase temporary employees. Therefore, members of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions call for a general strike in order to oppose labour market reforms and to urge a raise of minimum hourly wage to KRW 10,000 ($8.75)," Secretary General of Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, Lee Young-joo, said.
South Korean President Park Geun-hye has said structural reform to the labour market is necessary for economic growth.
The main roads near where the rally was held were blocked due to the demonstration, leading to severe traffic jams around the area. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
