- Story Text: The European Union's foreign policy chief, Federica Mogherini, hailed an agreement reached with Iran on curbing its nuclear programme on Tuesday (July 14) as "solid" and said it was an investment in future generations.
"I believe this agreement with all its parts makes it solid. It is very clear to me that this will bring the result that negotiations were aimed at, which is avoiding that Iran can ever achieve making a nuclear weapon. It's first of all a non-proliferation agreement," Mogherini said during an interview with Reuters in Vienna.
Under the deal reached by Iran and six major world powers sanctions imposed on Iran will be lifted in return for Tehran agreeing long-term curbs on a nuclear programme the West has suspected was aimed at creating a nuclear bomb.
"This deal is also an investment, that we all collectively do, in having future generations that are able and ready to live together in an open way, in a co-operative way. I think this will be the way in which the Iranian leadership will invest the political capital first of all that this deal gives them and also the money that the lifting of sanctions will produce," Mogherini said.
The deal finally emerged after nearly three weeks of intense negotiation between U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
