  • Story Text: Rio de Janeiro's Christ the Redeemer statue was lit up in the national colours of France on Tuesday (July 14) to commemorate Bastille Day, the French National Day.
    The event was also a sign of sportsmanship as Rio expects to welcome about 500 French athletes for next summer's 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
    The landmark statue alternated from being lit in the blue, white and red of the French flag and solid blue, the colour which represents French athletes.
    The event was organized by the French consulate in Rio de Janeiro, the France-Brazil Chamber of Commerce and the Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro, which oversees the Christ statue.
    The statue switched between the two colour patterns every ten minutes for an hour on Tuesday night.
