- Story Text: New York-based brand Public School showed off its spring/summer 2016 collection on Tuesday (July 14), the second day of New York Fashion Week: Mens.
Design duo Maxwell Osbourne and Dao-Yi Chow stayed true to their street-wear aspects.
"It's really sort of going back to our roots our menswear and reestablishing the classic Public School look. This whole idea of crisp tailoring meets sportswear. And so, you know, there has always been this idea of a public school uniform," said co-designer Chow.
To showcase the collection five mock police line-up settings were created in order promote an idea of unity and solidarity.
"You might sort of get the traditional images of what you would expect from a police line-up, you know, contextualizing or marginalizing a certain race or a certain group of people. But we wanted to sort of break those notions up and put like really well-dressed men and reinforce the idea that we're all sort of the same when we're lined up side by side," said Chow.
The brand is known for its lack of color, as most looks were centered around white, black and granite, however each piece was created with structure.
"That's really been what we do, we don't really do color. We like to play with proportion, we like to play with texture. So you'll have like a silk and cotton blend, some crisp popplets, some tropical wools all mixed together," explained Chow.
Celebrity fans of the brand including singer Joe Jonas, actors Jesse Metcalfe and Darren Criss and NBA stars Nick Young and Dwayne Wade who attended with his actress wife Gabrielle Union, were on hand to view the collection.
"Public School, they are real, they're cutting edge, they're cool, they're hip. I really like them. I love the growth of the brand, so I'm excited to be here and support them," said Wade.
"They're good eggs, they're good people, so you want good things to happen to good people," added Union.
