- Story Text: Tourists struggled through soaring temperatures in Madrid on Tuesday (July 14) as a heat wave swept across Spain.
The National Meteorological Agency (AEMET) predicted temperatures up to 41 degrees centigrade (105 Fahrenheit) in some regions of Madrid.
But thermometers in the city recorded temperatures of 43 degrees centigrade on Tuesday (July 14).
People in the Spanish capital cooled off in public fountains. Others were seen having ice creams, and pedestrians sheltering from the bright sun under umbrellas as they walked down Madrid´s commercial "Preciados" street.
"It is too hot. I probably can't get use to it because back in London it is not that hot so you have to drink a lot of water I guess," British tourist Tanica said.
The heat wave is now in its tenth day.
"We are suffering because we are from Argentina and the impact is very big. We came from Germany and it was cooler. But we have to bear it," Fernando from Argentina said.
But some tourists, like Tanica's friend Crystal, said she was enjoying the heat.
"I wish that London was like this. I like the heat. I think London should be hot all the time. Our weather at back home is horrible," said Crystal.
The meteorological agency has placed parts of the Region of Madrid, Castilla la Mancha and Andalucia under orange alert, just one notch under the highest. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
