- Story Text: European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini gave flashed the thumbs up sign when asked by reporters about the progress on Iran nuclear negotiations on Monday (July 13).
Iran and six world powers - Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States - appeared close to a deal to give Tehran sanctions relief in exchange for limits on its nuclear programme.
Foreign ministers will meet at 1900 GMT, three hours before the latest deadline for a nuclear deal expires, Iranian state media reported.
However, Iranian officials said talks could run past the deadline and success was not guaranteed.
Diplomats close to the talks said there were contingency plans for an announcement ceremony on Monday if the negotiators sealed an agreement.
An accord would open the door to ending sanctions that have crippled Iran's economy, in exchange for at least a decade of curbs on its nuclear programme.
Meanwhile, a group of American tourists from the U.S. state of Georgia gathered in front of Palais Coburg in Vienna city centre, where the talks are being held, to protest against the signing of the deal, chanting "No deal".
"What do we hope to achieve? Is a good deal for the world, the deal that actually brings peace, that doesn't allow a terrorist regime to get the bomb," a protester told Reuters.
The Western powers suspect Iran may have sought to use its civil nuclear programme as a cover to develop a nuclear weapons capability.
Iran says the programme is solely for peaceful purposes. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
