- Story Text: Mexico's Fire volcano lived up to its name on Monday (July 13) as it spewed spewed plumes of smoke and ash high into the sky, blanketing nearby villages in a thick of coat of ash which prompted the evacuation of hundreds of residents.
The volcano has had steady activity since Thursday (July 09).
Officials from Mexico's disaster relief agency walked around hamlets living in the shadow of the massive volcano to evaluate the situation on the ground.
"This volcano is still in an active, effusive phase. That is the report that we have and we're walking around to check homes, rooms, animals and people who remained," said Jose Manuel Gutierrez, the director for civil protection efforts in Comala.
Authorities have taken preventative measures and evacuated residents within a 12-kilometre (seven-mile) radius of the volcano's peak after lava was observed coming down its flanks.
Local schools have been turned into makeshift shelters for the estimated 670 residents who have left their homes, according to CENAPRED, Mexico's disaster prevention authority.
But local resident Vizcaino Solorio told Reuters he had to return home to feed his animals and look after his plants.
"I left yesterday because they told me we really have to leave, the volcano is dangerous but one has to return because you have to give food to animals and the plants and everything, and also to check the house," he said.
Officially known as the Coloma Volcano, it was most recently active in January and February of 2015 and is part of the Pacific's Ring of Fire. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
