- Story Text: A bevy of Hollywood stars from superhero to action heroine walked the press line for 20th Century Fox on Saturday (July 11) at the San Diego Comic-Con.
Films sharing exclusive clips, trailers and spoilers with Comic-Con fans included two Marvel films 'Deadpool' and 'Fantastic Four', franchise action adventure 'Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials' and horror drama 'Victor Frankenstein'.
Following in the footsteps of the Wolverine origin series, after several stop and start delays Marvel is expanding on anti-hero Deadpool in the character's own story spin-off.
Ryan Reynolds who played mercenary Wade Wilson turned Deadpool by government experimentation in the X-Men series will reprise his role in this stand-alone feature film. However, Reynolds has stated that this is the last 'super hero' he will play, Reynolds has also played the role of the Green Lantern which saw dismal box office numbers.
"I think I have played enough superheroes to say that if so if ever one came my way that wasn't Deadpool by all means I think that somebody else should probably have a crack at it. I've had a great run at that and I've been very lucky to work in that medium to varying degrees of success admittedly and I just feel like, this is the one I have wanted to play for eleven years and I am finally here doing it and that's all I could ever ask for, " Reynolds said.
Comic fans may remember the less than accurate portrayal of the 'merc with a mouth' in his last film appearance but cast members promise that this time the Marvel movie universe will not disappoint.
"This is Deadpool, that was sort of an attempt at having the character peripherally involved in a franchise. This is R-rated, the tone of Deadpool is self-aware, it is breaking the fourth wall. It's a different, it's not even a different movie, this is Deadpool," T.J. Miller, who plays Weasel, in 'Deadpool' told Reuters.
Ed Skrein, confessed the previous Deadpool has let him down as well and it was his goal as a comic book fan to bring an authentic comic book character to the screen this time.
"Yeah you know in all honesty I think we all were, and I think if nothing else, I think that we can guarantee that, that the fans have got the real Deadpool. Whatever else it does in terms of numbers and all that stuff I am just so proud that we've made the Deadpool movie that the fans want because we are fans, you know the fans got this movie made, they got it green-lit, but that was only the start, it only got us to the starting line, from there for us to have a successful race what was important was that we were fans, you know," Skrein, who plays Ajax, said.
Marvel is also re-visiting their 'Fantastic Four' characters with a rebooted version starring Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Bell as Mister Fantastic, Invisible Girl, The Human Torch and The Thing.
The film is being described as 'darker' than previous versions.
In an already heavily saturated action adventure franchise movie market 'Maze Runner 2 : Scorch Trials' will compete for audiences against comparable Hunger Games and Divergent films, both led by strong female leads.
However, actor Rosa Salazar, who had a small role in 'Insurgent' and commands a lead role in 'Maze Runner 2' sees the Maze Runner series as a decidedly different kind of Hollywood film.
"You do get a lot of comparison because there are so many strong, female leads that are the head of these huge franchises now. It's nice to be a character who has that same essence who is sort of like an underdog, who's dejected from society, who's just trying to survive, not trying to overthrow anything, just trying to get by and in the process becoming more vulnerable," Salazar told Reuters.
And her co-star Giancarlo Esposito agreed.
"Divided by its humanity, 'Maze Runner' is defined by its humanity, its special because people want to be free, not only in their own personal lives but they want to be free when they go to be entertained as well is a true difference in just the explosions and the films that are just there to edify that action brand," Esposito said.
Less action and more drama, 20th Century Fox is also releasing 'Victor Frankenstein' later this year. The film stars James McAvoy as Victor Von Frankenstein and Daniel Radcliffe as Igor.
However while many may see a horror film character, director Paul McGuigan senses a love story.
"And also there is the love of science and the love of invention that also marries them together but also creates tension, like any good love story there is always a tension there, there's always… and what interested me about the film was it was really about Victor Frankenstein not about the monster because everyone thinks the monster is called Frankenstein, they forget it's actually Victor Frankenstein, well I certainly used to think that anyway," McGuigan said.
'Fantastic Four' will be released in August of next month, 'Maze Runner: The Scorch Trails' and 'Victor Frankenstein' in the fall later this year and 'Deadpool' in February 2016 on Valentine's Day. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
