  • Story Text: The funeral of veteran actor Omar Sharif has been held on Sunday (July 12).
    Actor Omar Sharif, best known for his portrayal of the title character in the hit 1966 film "Doctor Zhivago" and for his work in "Lawrence of Arabia", died of a heart attack on Friday, his agent said. He was 83.
    Sharif was one of the few Arab actors to make it big in Hollywood.
    Zahi Hawas, Egypt's former antiquities minister and a man who was friends with Sharif, attended the funeral.
    "Inside the heart of all of Egyptians, and the people all over the world, and I think the, as a movie star, he will not be repeated again. He was unique, with his voice, with his acting, his movies that he did - it will never happen again in the history of Hollywood," said Hawas.
    Prominent Egyptian actor, Hussein Fahmy, was also in attendance and said that Sharif loved the acting business and his work.
    "A great actor. The man loved his business, his work. He loved his people. A man who loved Egypt and represented the Egyptian art in its best form. Somebody that we're going to miss for a very long time. Thank you," said Fahmy.
    Sharif won international fame and an Oscar-nomination for best supporting actor for his role in "Lawrence of Arabia" with Peter O'Toole. He later became a huge star in his own right for his portrayal of the title character in the film based on Boris Pasternak's novel "Doctor Zhivago".
