- Story Text: Hundreds of Palestinians, living in the Syrian capital, demonstrated on Friday (July 10) in old Damascus to celebrate al Quds or Jerusalem day.
It's an annual event celebrated by many Muslims on the last Friday of Ramadan, and is held to show solidarity with the Palestinian cause.
Al Quds was first called for by Iran's late Supreme leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in 1979.
Friday's celebration in Damascus used to be held in the Yarmouk refugee camp, but was moved because of the deteriorating security situation and ongoing conflict inside the camp, which has displaced thousands of Palestinians.
This year the celebration took place next to the ancient Umayyad Mosque in old Damascus.
Syria hosts more than 500,000 Palestinian refugees, many of which are facing extreme hardships because of Syria's ongoing civil war. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
