- Story Text: A gunman shot and killed two people in northern Bavaria on Friday (July 10) and was later captured, German police said.
Two mechanics working at a petrol station in Bad Windsheim overpowered the man after he entered the shop and threatened employees with a gun, police said.
The man shot dead an 82-year-old woman from his Mercedes convertible in the small town of Leutershausen and later a 72-year-old cyclist in nearby Rammersdorf.
Another man was threatened with a gun, and shortly afterwards a tractor driver was shot at, but was unhurt, police said.
Bavarian interior minister Joachim Hermann told Reuters that the perpetrator had killed "at random" as far as they could tell so far.
"As far as we are aware at the moment, there was a shot fired in a small part of Leutershausen in which an elderly lady was killed at random. The same perpetrator drove on for some kilometres and shot a cyclist who also died soon afterwards. Those were the two killed victims. The perpetrator than drove on and threatened another driver but he was uninjured. There were no shots fired. And some villages on, he shot again at a tractor driver who luckily was only injured by some glass splinters," Hermann said.
Head prosecutor of the region, Gerhard Neuhof, told a news conference that the perpetrator was finally stopped by two people at the petrol station.
"As far as I know at this moment, the suspect threatened employees of the petrol station in Bad Windsheim. And they - probably mechanics - were able to subdue him," Neuhof said.
The suspect, a 47-year-old from the nearby town of Ansbach named as Bernd G, not previously known to the authorities, was detained by police at around 0945 GMT after a manhunt in which four helicopters were used.
The gunman is currently undergoing psychiatric examination, after which police will decide whether to issue an arrest warrant or send him to a psychiatric hospital. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
