- Story Text: Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi welcomed Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff on Friday (July 10) afternoon at Palazzo Chigi, Italy's government seat, where the two were meeting for talks.
Renzi and Rousseff attended a brief welcoming ceremony in the courtyard of the government seat before entering the building for talks between Italian and Brazilian delegations.
The meeting came upon Rousseff's return from the summit of the BRICS emerging nations where she met with the other leaders from the bloc which also includes Russia, India, China and South Africa in the Russian city of Ufa.
Addressing reporter after the closed-door talks, Renzi said Rousseff had informed him on the proceedings of the summit.
The themes touched during the meeting were vast, Renzi said.
"In our talks we addressed several open questions of possible exchanges in the fields of infrastructure, energy, railways, ships and the presence of Brazilian companies in Italy. We also talked at length about the sectors which could help advance our bilateral relations as well as about how, faced with the injustices of the world, the international organisations should operate. We mentioned FAO, which, as you know, is headed by a Brazilian and has its headquarters here in Rome and we obviously also talked about the Expo, and the battles in the field of nutrition, as well as the themes of development and opportunities in the agro-food sector," he said.
Rousseff, who addressing a news conference outside the summit in Russia on Thursday (July 9) recognised that her country's economy is going through an "extremely difficult" moment, said that they discussed the New Development Bank launched by the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) group of emerging economies.
"We've already created the board of governors and directors, and top management of the bank as well as the agreement on contingency reserves which was also signed by the central banks of the five BRICS countries. And I told the prime minister how important it is for all of us to have this process of growth as far as resources for investment in infrastructure and production activities," Rousseff said.
Rousseff is due to visit the Milan Expo world fair on Saturday (July 11). - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
