- Story Text: Ambassador Thomas Shannon, Counselor of the Department of State, led a U.S. delegation to Honduras where he met with Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez on Wednesday (July 8).
Shannon's delegation includes representatives from the Department of State, the U.S. Agency for International Development, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Department of Justice. The trip is part of a five-day tour which also includes El Salvador and Guatemala and runs through July 10, 2015.
According to the Department of State, Ambassador Shannon discussed efforts in support of planning related to the U.S. Strategy for Engagement in Central America.
Shannon will also meet with senior government officials in each of the three countries to discuss issues related to security, governance, and economic prosperity.
This trip will provide an opportunity for follow up on President Barack Obama's meeting with his counterparts from these three countries in July 2014. It will also follow up on Secretary Kerry's meeting with the foreign ministers of El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras at the UN General Assembly in September 2014 and Vice President Biden's meeting with the presidents of these three countries in November 2014, a trip to Guatemala in March and meeting with the President of Honduras in June.
Meetings between representatives of the four countries have increased since last summer tens of thousands of children, fleeing violence, unaccompanied by parents or relatives flooded across the southern U.S. border illegally, forcing the Obama administration and Congress to grapple with both a humanitarian crisis and a budget dilemma.
The situation caused the Central American leaders to visit Washington and involved an extensive monitoring of U.S. cooperation with them by Biden. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
