- Story Text: A sports centre was turned into a makeshift church in Bolivia on Thursday (July 09) for Pope Francis as he moves to Santa Cruz to spread his message of love, compassion and the environment in South America.
The 78-year-old pontiff is on the fifth day of his three-nation homecoming tour where he met with religious leaders and faithful ahead of his mass in the city.
At Santa Cruz's Don Bosco Coliseum, he pressed Catholics to practise compassion.
"Compassion without listening does not exist. There is no compassion without solidarity with one another. Compassion is not silencing the pain but rather the contrary, it's the logic of love. It's a logic that is not based on fear but in freedom giving birth to love and which puts goodness in others above all else," he said.
According to local media, the coliseum was filled to capacity, many of those there members of the clergy, to hear the Pope's words.
"We're feeling very happy, with our hearts completely full with our God, with eternal faith in him (pope) because he is the shepherd of humanity, the vicar of Christ," said worshipper, Evelin de la Fuente.
"Seeing Pope Francis has given me a lot of joy and I give thanks to God because I could see him and I hope that this is a blessing for all of Bolivia," added Catholic, Francisco Renato.
Francis arrived in Bolivia on Wednesday (July 08) and praised Bolivia's social reforms to spread wealth under leftist President Evo Morales. On Friday (July 10), he will walk into Bolivia's notoriously violent Palmasola prison. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
