- Story Text: The 'music' coming from Greek prime minister Alexis Tsipras concerning his countries debt negotiations with its euro zone partners is more positive than previously, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said on Wednesday (July 8).
"They (Greece) have asked for a three year programme. They have promised to begin carrying out reforms from Monday (July 13), that is what the letter says. They have promised, and this is very important, to fulfill the rules and procedures," Rajoy said during a joint news conference with Peruvian President Ollanta Humala.
"They have expressed, and this is also very important, their will to meet the payments. This is of common sense. And finally they have announced that tomorrow, July 9th, they will present their reform agency to the ESM (European Stability Mechanism). They speak about fiscal and pension reforms. The music is different from what we have heard until today and this is positive," Rajoy said.
The President of Peru, as part of his official visit to Spain, met Rajoy to discuss issues both countries are battling at present.
For spain, one of the biggest concerns is the impact of the debt crisis on the euro zone.
Greece on Wednesday submitted a formal request for a three-year loan from the European rescue fund, the European Stability Mechanism (ESM).
The Spanish Prime Minister is hopeful that Greece and the European Union will reach an agreement soon.
"This situation of uncertainty has to end now. For the Europeans living in Greece, for the Greek government and for the European Union as a whole," Rajoy said.
If experts from the European Commission, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund deem the proposals viable, euro zone finance ministers would meet on Saturday (July 11) to recommend opening negotiations with Athens. A special summit of the 28-nation EU would then meet on Sunday to approve an aid plan.
Euro zone members had given Greece until the end of the week to come up with a proposal for sweeping reforms in return for loans.
People familiar with Greece's financial system said the banks could start running out of money within two days unless they received more liquidity. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
