- Story Text: The firing of the cannon in Bahrain signals the end of the day's fast informing Muslims observing Ramadan that it's time for iftar.
The use of the cannon is a Ramadan tradition that is done in a number of different countries in the Arab world.
Another tradition common during the holy month is the distribution of free meals to those in need. One charity that is handing out free food is Manama-based charity, Al Eslah society.
Tariq Taha Al Shaikh, is the charity's executive director.
"We have many projects. In Bahrain, for example, we have over thirty mosques that we support by providing iftar in mosques with the money donated to us. But also in houses, we have more than 600 families in need that we distribute coupons to support them during Ramadan," Al Shaikh said.
"Even young people like to contribute. We find many young people distributing food packages for poor families in Bahrain. But also outside Bahrain. For example, in Syria and Palestine and in some countries experiencing disasters, thank God, everyone come together during Ramadan and everyone tries to spread goodness to earn reward from God during this blessed month," he added.
Many of the those that receive the free meals in Bahrain are migrant workers predominantly from South Asia.
