- Story Text: Chanel's shows are always grandiose and this time round was no exception, as designer Karl Lagerfeld chose a Casino as a setting for his latest Autumn-Winter Haute-Couture collection at Paris Fashion Week on Tuesday (July 7).
The ephemeral Casino had everything it needed, the roulette wheel and the dealers, dressed in impeccable suits. Before the show started, prestigious clients arrived to gamble, in this 'cercle privé' as the house called it, in the heart of Paris, such as American actresses Kristen Stewart and Julianne Moore, British singer Rita Ora and French singer and actress Vanessa Paradis and her daughter Lilly-Rose Depp.
And for the first time, 3-D printers were used to make jackets displayed on the catwalk. 3-D printing was used to build the structure of the jacket. The technology involves a laser power source to bid material together to create a solid structure. Lagerfeld then added material, embroidery to finish the jacket. The technology is relatively new and still used for rapid prototyping.
For Lagerfeld, the fashion industry needs to adapt to modern technology:
"You know fashion is not needed, there are other problems in the world which may be more important, so this is not a problem but it's an industry and you know, fashion has to go with time, if fashion doesn't go with time, fashion would be lost," he said.
Lagerfeld also said that each guest pretending to gamble during the show had all been designed a dress for the occasion:
"I like the idea that people dress to go to it (Casino). Now they don't dress anymore. And Chanel wanted me to do something with the jewellery, so I thought it was fun to to special dresses for actresses like Julian Moore and Kirsten Stewart and all the young actresses and things like this who had dresses from Chanel made for them with pieces of the Chanel jewellery collection - totally unrelated to the collection - that's why the collection is very graphic and these are really dresses made for the people," he said. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
