  • Story Text: A small but vociferous and energetic group of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) members participate in Santo Domingo's eighth annual Gay Pride parade Sunday (July 5).
    At the onset of the parade organizer David Ventura said no one shuold take their rights away.
    "These people here, there are 22 people here with us to tell the Dominican Republic that love conquers hate and no one can take our rights away," he said to a small crowd. "They can touch us, humiliate us, squash us but we will be standing there with our heads upright saying 'I am a homosexual and what do I care what you think because I am proud of who I am.'"
    The parade queens were on floats waving to onlookers as the noisy caravan made its way through the streets of the city.
    "I am here because I understand that they are Dominicans and they have their sexual preferences and deserve our respect," said local politician Max Puid.
