Dozens of costumed men sprinted on Thursday (July 02) in Madrids traditional gay pride high heels race.
Wearing stilettos, pumps, kitten heels and wedges of all kinds the participants welcomed the five-day gay pride celebration in a colourful and cheerful way.
The participants, the competition is limited to men, taped their shoes to run as fast as possible down the packed street of Pelayo in the gay neighbourhood of Chueca.
John arrived in Spain from New York to join the race and celebrate the Gay Pride.
"I came here three years ago and accidentally stumble upon this race I came back for Pride this year but I knew I wanted to run. So I actually bought these today so I can run. Im happy to join in," he said minutes before the race.
Participants have to wear 10 cm or higher heels to compete.
Jason from Peru was amazed by the atmosphere.
"Really fun. Im completely excited because it is the first time that I participate in the high heels race. Every year I want to participate and I never did. This is the first year. I go on heels to the Pride every year but I have never run with them," he said.
"I do this to break tabus, to tell everybody to come here because they are going to have a fucking good time," said Alfonso.
Local businessmen handed out more than 500 euros in prizes.
The 2015 high heels race winner was Jason who got the prize of 250 euros, a dinner for two and vouchers for the local businesses. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
