- Story Text: Despite being away from the noise of politicians and the large anti-austerity demonstrations of the capital Athens, Greeks in the Island of Naxos who went to the polls on Sunday (July 5) said they want to take part in a decision that could change the future of their country.
As polls opened at 7 a.m. local time, they began turning out at polling stations after being called at eight-days notice by their left-wing Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras to say 'Yes' or 'No' in a referendum on a bailout offer from creditors.
"I vote 'No', said Yanis as he left one of the three primary schools that serve as voting stations in Naxos City. "Because all these years, we voted 'Yes', it was awful for my country, so I vote 'No', and if it's possible to go out of euro. Drachmas, go back to drachmas."
Many other told Reuters they voted 'No' as well.
Iro Farkona said Greeks should reject Europe's bailout plan.
"I think Europe should start to respect also the smaller countries. Maybe we are not rich or something, but it's their fault, they brought us here, where we are, and not the Greeks," she said.
5,500 people were registered to vote at the three polling stations in the city of Naxos.
The polling stations will close at 7 pm local (1600GMT) as in the rest of Greece. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
