- Story Text: Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis said on Thursday (July 2) that the banks would reopen on Tuesday (July 7) if a bailout agreement is reached with international creditors on Monday (July 6).
Varoufakis told Greek reporters gathered outside the Finance Ministry that he still confident of a 'no' vote in a snap referendum due to be held on Sunday (July 5).
The result could decide the country's future in the euro zone.
Pressed by a Greek reporter on whether the banks would open next Monday, Varoufakis indicated that they would reopen Tuesday and that a deal with Greece's international creditors would be clinched as it was in Europe's best interests.
There is still a deadlock between the left-wing government and its international lenders on the terms of a cash-for-reforms deal that can help Greece resolve its debt crisis.
Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras' rejection of what he terms the "blackmail" of EU and IMF creditors demanding spending cuts and tax hikes has angered Greece's partners to the extent that there is no hope of reconciliation before Sunday's vote on the issue.
With banks closed for a fourth day and capital controls in place, Varoufakis tied his fate to the outcome of the vote, saying he would resign if the government's call for a "no" to the bailout terms were ignored. The future of Prime Minister Tsipras would be similarly in doubt.
On Sunday it will fall to the Greek people to decide an issue that their government was unable to settle in months of acrimonious negotiations with their European partners. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
