- Story Text: Temperatures in London hit 34.5 Celsius (87 Fahrenheit) by lunchtime, making it the hottest day in July in nine years in the UK.
The mercury was set to climb up to 35 Celsius as the afternoon sun beat down on the south coast beaches and in the capital.
Officials have issued health warnings.
"We are asking the public to keep an eye out on their friends and family, particularly if they know someone who has got an underlying health condition, such as a heart problem, or a breathing problem, to make sure they are well hydrated through the day," said Kevin Ellison, from Public Health England.
In the searing heat, Wimbledon crowds wilted as they queued to get into the tennis tournament.
Judy Murray, mother of Britain's tennis star Andy Murray, handed out cups of water to those lining up.
At Trafalgar Square and across London's royal parks, children played in fountains while workers tried to catch some sunshine during the day.
The Met Office has forecast that the British heatwave will be over by Thursday (July 2) with showers and a maximum temperature of 23C (73.4F) expected in London. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
