- Story Text: Parisians cooled off in the shade and water sprinklers on Tuesday (June 30) as temperatures soared in the French capital hit by a wave of heat coming from North Africa.
The national meteorological service issued an "orange" warning over a large part of France with temperatures set to soar in the coming days.
Sun-kissed locals flocked to the city's parks, sunbathing while children -- and adults -- played in the fountains and sprinklers.
"As you can see I have just got out of the water sprinklers, it is very pleasant, really cool, we are making the most of it to cool off, this morning things are all right, but this afternoon it is going to get really hot," said Parisian Thomas Papin.
Such high temperatures at this time of the year have not been recorded in more than 60 years, according to Meteo France. Temperatures are unlikely to drop to below 20°C at night.
"Yes, yes, you need to prepare yourself for it a little bit and hydrate well, step out a little later in the evening or do your activities early in the morning, avoid the hot hours of the afternoon," said another Parisian, Olivier Coste.
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said a powerful heat wave is set to sweep across the whole of Western Europe, meaning temperatures in Portugal, Spain and France could reach up to 40 degrees Celsius.
"Temperatures in Spain reached more that 43 degrees in Cordoba on Sunday. Temperatures in parts of France are also high and the heat which hit the Iberia Peninsula is now going to move northwards in the next couple of days," WMO media officer Clare Nullis said.
In addition to the health impact, heat waves also place an increased stain on infrastructure such as power, water and transport, the WMO warned. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
