- Story Text: Spain's King Felipe and Queen Letizia opened their state visit to Mexico on Monday (June 29), with the king saying the trip was an opportunity to prove how much both countries have in common.
The Spanish royals were welcomed with a military honour guard in Mexico City's Campo Marte.
This is King Felipe's first state visit to Mexico. However, it is his fifth meeting with President Enrique Pena Nieto.
The 47-year-old king, crowned nearly a year ago after the abdication of his father Juan Carlos, spoke about the 'enormous potential' of the relationship between Spain and Mexico.
"This visit will serve so that 170 million Mexicans and Spaniards can again prove again how much we have in common, the strength and vitality of our relationships and the enormous potential that lies before us," Felipe said.
Mexico and Spain are linked by strong historical and cultural ties, as well as agreement on various international issues. In terms of the economy and cooperation, Mexico and Spain have a close relationship. Mexico is the main Spanish trade partner in Latin America.
Pena Nieto, said the presence of the royals spoke of the importance of their bilateral relationship.
"As head of state, your presence this day demonstrates the strategic importance of both countries and we bestow to our bilateral relationship. Spain and Mexico, have built a broad and vigorous work agenda that is expressed in an intense cooperation and an important economic exchange," Pena Nieto said.
In the past 15 years, Spain has been the second source of foreign investment in Mexico among the countries of the European Union and third globally; it exceeded 49 billion dollars.
Currently there are more than 5000 Spanish companies investing in the country.
