Chad's Interior Minister, Hamid Breme, said on Monday (June 29) 11 people were killed, including 5 police officers, during an operation to dismantle a Boko Haram cell that was blamed for twin suicide bombings in N'Djamena on June 15.
"This morning, our security forces arrived there at 5 am for a raid, according to the rules dictated by the law in the case of seizures. As soon as the door opened, they (the militants) saw how we arrested and handcuffed one of their own. Five of them blew themselves up with their explosives. These five were killed and sadly, we regret the deaths of five police officers," Breme said.
Police later found the body of a sixth militant, Breme said.
Two Boko Haram militants were arrested, along with a woman and two children found inside the compound. Police are searching for a second woman who fled.
The operation is the latest by security forces in Chad after suicide bombers killed 34 people in the capital, N'Djamena, on June 15.
The suspected Boko Haram attack on two police offices in N'Djamena was the largest of its kind in Chad.
?Security forces on Sunday (June 28) arrested 60 suspected militants and dismantled the cell responsible for the attacks, which they said were conducted by militants from Chad, Cameroon, Mali and Nigeria.
Breme said the "mastermind" for Boko Haram in Chad and Northern Cameroon was among those arrested on Sunday (June 28).
Chad has played a leading role in helping Nigerian forces win back territory from Boko Haram, which has mounted a six-year insurgency to carve out an Islamist caliphate in Nigeria's northeast and attacked neighbouring countries like Niger and Cameroon. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
